05 Mar “Mushroom” Massaman curry – meat substitutes for vegetarians
Glutinous ‘mock beef’ almost makes me feel as sick in the stomach as eating the real, murdered version. There are so many dodgy meat substitutes for vegetarians.
It is hard to win!
I was curious because this restaurant said their Massaman beef was made out of mushrooms. That wasn’t what it tasted like, or what the texture of the ‘meat’ felt like when I ate it. It felt spongy like gluten, and it didn’t taste like mushrooms either.
It was very disappointing, and I object to the false advertising.
It is such a first-world problem though. I am grateful to have food to nourish myself tonight, much less food that someone else made and delivered to me within 40 minutes.
Also, no one died for it. And that’s a nice thing!
Avoiding meat substitutes for vegetarians
The problem is that meat substitutes for vegetarians are often highly processed, and therefore not really that good for your health. I try to avoid them where I can and opt for whole foods that are not processed. For example, instead of a processed burger that is made of some kind of meat substitute, I look for burgers that are made of beans, quinoa or a mixture of those sorts of ingredients. I think it makes a big difference.
As grateful as I am for the food, I really didn’t need that processed stuff in my stomach tonight.
It just gets so hard sometimes, because as a reducetarian, I am looking for opportunities to not eat meat – but, the alternatives can be quite sickening sometimes.
And sometimes, after a particularly hard week, getting into the kitchen to cook doesn’t feel like a good thing to do.
Again, I have that privilege, and many don’t.
Maybe that is the type of food product I could work on – meat substitutes for vegetarians that are whole foods!
It will never take off. The hospitality industry is filled with examples of countless meals that are bad for our health. No one cares, apparently!
