04 Jul Chipotle Pulled Tempeh Roll at The Fox Hotel
I made a special trip to The Fox Hotel tonight. It is Friday night and I had planned to ‘eat out’ in some form. To begin with, I explored some of the offerings of Uber Eats. However, I quickly realised that I was going to pay THROUGH THE NOSE for a meal that was 600 calories or more. And I just couldn’t stomach it.
I had been craving a ‘burger’ all day, since I saw two brothers wrap their gobs around the juiciest looking burgers at Studley Park Boathouse this morning. I couldn’t shake the craving all day, but did not cave to the desire at lunch time when I could have gone to Goldy’s to get a burger or a vegan burger for lunch.
Opportunity strikes!
Once dinner came, I was inspired by my Uber security code, which was xx38, and remembered the tasty mushroom burger I had eaten before at the Fox Hotel.
I checked their menu, and perused their burger options. The beef and bacon burger is very tasty, and it drew me in, but what really caught my eye was the chipotle pulled tempeh roll.
This is what I am TALKING ABOUT. . . I was so curious. . . Was it going to be GOOD?
This is creative plant protein right there. And it was an easy decision to get on my pegs and walk to The Fox Hotel in Collingwood.
(15,245 steps today – so I reached my target).
Was it any good?
My food did not take too long to arrive and it was a wonderfully presented dish with a long dinner roll, overflowing with coleslaw and pulled tempeh and thick cut chips on the side.
The tempeh itself was incredibly TASTY, especially when mixed in a mouthful with coriander, the coleslaw, cheese and a bite of a potato chip.
It was a beautiful flavour experience, and now that I am digesting this meal I feel completely satiated, because of the high protein in the tempeh. A mushroom burger, while tasty, is not going to lead to the same degree of fullness due to the lack of protein. And this is the motivation of all my work in this field at this time.
The roll was a normal long roll, and it was filled to the brim, but like all their burgers, it was too much food for one person. I stopped half way through and left the rest on my plate, which felt wasteful, but better than eating it all, I think. . .
I understand the logic behind the big meals. If they are bigger, then they can justify charging more for the meal, and as the ingredients don’t really cost that much, they build out their margins that way.
I don’t begrudge them the money, but I wish it didn’t have to (usually) be that way. Our mercenary society will stop at nothing for an extra buck, so it seems.
Vegan option?
As I mentioned, my tempeh roll had coleslaw and cheese on it. So, it was not vegan. However, I believe the menu had a vegan option for that meal, which is wonderful. Very inclusive too, since anyone with any dietary requirements could eat the vegan or gluten free versions of this meal.
I would very much recommend this delicious roll from The Fox Hotel, especially if you are particularly hungry, or feel like trying something ‘a bit different’.
Bon Appetit!
