31 Jul Intermittent fasting- some of the benefits
What have you learned about intermittent fasting? I’ve started doing some fasting. It makes sense on a number of different levels. So, if you’re doing intermittent fasting, you have a 16 hour fasting period and eight hour eating period. It can be quite good for inflammation. I read a study about a woman who was 59 or something. And I think it was a pretty credible article, but she had a metabolic age of 21 and she’s put it down to a number of different things. Intermittent fasting was one of them.
Intermittent fasting does reduce inflammation. I’ve heard that from a number of different sources. And if you want to test the information, you can get a test at the doctor. CRP (C Reactive Protein) is one of them. It’s not something that they test normally, so you do have to ask them for it. But it can be good to just find out because if chronic information over the period of your life can have impacts on longevity, and things like Alzheimer’s or dementia. That’s one of the biggest things. The inflammation impacts your brain. Another piece of evidence for the benefits of fasting at night was another article that if you snack at night, it’s not good for your brain health.
So for the last, I think for about a week, a little bit more than a week. I’ve been stopping eating, making sure I have my evening meal before 7:00. And then starting eating again at 11:00. To be able to do that, I’ll have a coffee before 11, and so break my rule and have coffee on an empty stomach, but instead of having a… a small oat latte, which is what I normally do, and the oat milk might not be so good. I’ve been having a long macchiato with almond milk, so it’s, like, two shots of coffee and a little bit of tiny bit of milk. Almond milk, which doesn’t have carbohydrates. And so… It does feel like it is working quite well. And I’ve been able to fast till 11 sometimes quite a bit past 11, before I eat, and then I have normal breakfast and have it just eat normally.
I think that there is evidence for the fact that intermittent fasting can be hard to stick to long term. However, this can be helped by having a predictable structure. Like 7 pm to 11 am each day.
However, the point of my post, is the fact that it means that in the evening, I’m not having my normal berry… cacao,… smoothie, which is my normal dessert. But what I do do is have a lot of herbal tea, and that is adding a lot to… my daily fluid. And I have read during my research of my 7 day nutrition review, you should have 35 millilitres of water for every kilogram that you weigh. So, for most people, it’s kind of up above three litres, basically. And a lot of people don’t get enough water or fluid, but you can count teas and all the hot cocoa hot chocolates, and the lattes, and it all adds up, but fluid is really important, and we’re not getting enough.
So another benefit of intermittent fasting is that it encourages a lot of hydration, such as herbal tea, due to the fact that there is no other option for consumption.
Another tip for hydration is to go to a cafe and just make a point to drink the whole bottle of water that they give you on the table, it’s a really good way to get a whole heap of fluid in.
